Utsurimono
Utsurimono (oot-SOO-ree-moh-noh) are striking black-based koi with vibrant secondary colors layered in dramatic patterns. “Utsuri” means “reflection,” referencing the mirrored, wrapping contrast of black and color on the koi’s body.
The three most common varieties are Hi Utsuri (black with red), Shiro Utsuri (black with white), and Ki Utsuri (black with yellow). Their sumi base should be deep and glossy, offering bold contrast against the overlaying hue.

What to Look For
High-quality Utsurimono have balanced color placement, with black wrapping the body like ink brushed across canvas. The white, red, or yellow should appear strong and clean, ideally forming a checkerboard-style interplay with the sumi. Watch for strong contrast and refined head markings.
