Kawarimono
Kawarimono (kah-WAH-ree-moh-noh) is the “catch-all” category for non-Gosanke koi that don’t fit neatly into other groups. This classification is home to unique and experimental varieties, often prized for their rarity and individuality.
Popular types include Kumonryu (scaleless black and white koi that change patterns), Beni Kumonryu (adds red to the palette), and Kikokuryu (metallic versions with chrome-like skin). This group is perfect for hobbyists looking for one-of-a-kind koi.

Because Kawarimono includes so many varieties, evaluation criteria differ widely. Generally, look for strong color, interesting or unique patterns, and good skin quality. In a dynamic-changing koi like Kumonryu, the koi’s potential is just as important as its current appearance.
